What is SUSTAINABLE TOURISM?
Sustainable tourism is tourism development that avoids damage to the environment, economy and cultures of the locations where it takes place. The objective of sustainable tourism is to ensure that development is a positive experience for local community, tourism companies, and tourists themselves. Under sustainable tourism, it may be unlikely to experience the kind of 'boom and bust' that led to the rapid growth.

Sustainable tourism is INFORMATIVE
Tourists not only learn about the destination they visit, they also learn how to help sustain its character while deepening their own travel experiences. Community learn that the ordinary and familiar may be of interest and value to outsiders.

Sustainable tourism supports INTEGRITY of place.
Destination-savvy travelers seek out businesses that emphasize the character of the locale in terms of architecture, cuisine, heritage, aesthetics, and ecology. Tourism revenues in turn raise local perceived value of those assets.

Sustainable tourism BENEFITS local residents.
Travel businesses do their best to employ and train local people, buy local supplies, and use local services.

Sustainable tourism CONSERVES resources.
Environmentally aware travelers favour businesses that minimize pollution, waste, energy consumption, water usage, landscaping chemicals, and unnecessary night-time lighting.

Sustainable tourism RESPECTS local culture and tradition.
Foreign visitors learn about and observe local etiquette, including using at least a few courtesy words in the local language. Residents learn how to deal with foreign expectations that may differ from their own.

Sustainable tourism does NOT ABUSE its product.
Stakeholders anticipate development pressures and apply limits and management techniques to prevent the "loved to death" syndrome. Businesses cooperate to sustain natural habitats, heritage sites, scenic appeal, and local culture.

QUALITY is the most important rather than quantity.
Communities measure tourism success not by sheer numbers of visitors, but by length of stay, money spent, and quality of experience.

Sustainable tourism also means GREAT trips.
Satisfied, excited visitors bring new knowledge home and send friends off to experience the same thing - which provides continuing business for the destination.

How to Be a GREEN TOURIST?
Eco-tourism encourages environmentally responsible travel around the world. When you travel green or want to become an eco-tourist, your goal is to do no harm to the environment. While you vacation, you can help give Mother Earth a well deserved rest.

  1. When you book your hotel, ask about their environmental policies and practices. Choose lodging in a hotel that is committed to the green movement.
  2. Travel light. Extra luggage means extra airplane fuel. Choose organic clothing. Be sure to be aware of local conventions and dress accordingly. Respect places where modest dress is required.
  3. Walk, bike or use the local transportation. If you need to rent a car, request a hybrid.
  4. Enrich your experience while supporting the local economy. Hire local guides or ask tour operators to use local guides.
  5. Save trees. Go paperless by downloading tickets, maps, travel guides, boarding passes to a handheld device. Consider podcasted tours and itineraries. Try to get rid of excess packaging before you go.
  6. Reuse towels and sheets. Many hotels already make this suggestion to their guests. Use only the towels that you need and then hang them to dry. If you request to not have your sheets changed daily, you can help save up to 30 gallons of water.
  7. Respect the natural environment. Follow designated trails and don't disturb the natural habitat.. Never buy crafts made from endangered species.

Tips & Warnings

Always ask before you take someone's photograph.
